 AVID:

This year your students will be participating in AVID. AVID stands for Advancement via Individual Determination. This program is designed to better prepare students for college by providing them the necessary skills to be successful in school. For instance they will reflect on what it means to be good student, what it looks like to be a good student and shown how to be a good student. Not all students will need as much instruction in this area, but I can assure you that even as a previous student the information provided would have benefited me by providing me with the information I was missing.

Having said that all students there will be some things that are absolutely necessary to ensure that everyone in the classroom is working towards the same goals. Some of those goals will be better organization, note-taking skills, study skills, time management skills and student responsibility, determination & motivation.

Students will be provided with a binder and an agenda. Supplies they will need to bring include: 3 #2 pencils, a pencil sharpener with a cap on it, 3 highlighters (blue, yellow and green), 1 pencil eraser, a pencil pocket that has 3 holes in it (it needs to fit in the front of a binder), 2 black dry erase markers (the small thin ones), and a pack of dividers.

*Important: Any other school supplies that are brought including; colored pencils, glue, scissors, pens, paper or anything else not mentioned above will be kept in backpacks or at home.

Unnecessary Items (to be kept at home); mechanical pencils, pencil boxes, markers or any other supplies that are very distracting.

This may seem harsh, but I assure you that when these items are brought to school they are distracting and take up a large amount of your students valuable learning time. Students spend time attempting to trade, finagle, borrow, break apart (very common) and anything else they can think of in order to be accepted, distracted, find friends, show off or just plane goof off. I would rather your students obtain the necessary information to help them grow and become responsible little human beings that they are all capable of becoming. I have faith in each and everyone.
